Who is Thierno Barry?
Few players have travelled as peculiar a path as Thierno Barry. Born in Lyon, Barry spent his teenage years grinding it out in the lower reaches of the French football pyramid, reminiscent of Didier Drogba and Olivier Giroud. After spells at Saint-Priest and Toulon, he moved to Sochaux’s B team in the French fifth tier, providing 13 goals and assists in 22 games but never breaking into the first team.
Three months before turning 20, ahead of the 2022-23 season, Barry moved to the second-division Belgian side SK Beveren and received a first taste of professional football. With 0.86 non-penalty goals and assists p90, 22/23 proved his true breakthrough year - and earned him a move to FC Basel.
