Mika Biereth madness

The mind-blowing stats behind the Monaco man's match-ball collection

Mika Biereth madness

March is here but madness arrived on the final night of February. I want to get stuck straight in. I recommend reading this particular edition in a browser as I have absolutely rinsed the Toggle feature.

Tonight, on Monday Night SCOUTED:
- Lamine Yamal goes supernova, and more SCOUTED Stats
- Mika Biereth’s mind-blowing match-ball madness
- A SCOUTED breakdown for UEFA Competition Rounds of 16

SCOUTED Stats

As is now the custom, we begin with your update for the best single-game tallies recorded by players under the age of 23 across Europe's Big Five Leagues in 2024/25. All records are based on that criteria unless stated otherwise. I have also tested a new format this week as I am writing too much for the ‘Callout’ feature.

Monday Night SCOUTED would not be possible without an annual subscription to Stathead. That is why SCOUTED are official Brand Ambassadors of FBref.

🎩 Mika Biereth

Mika Biereth is now resposible for 33.3% of the nine hat-tricks scored by players under the age of 23 across Europe’s Big Five Leagues this season.

🫃 Mika Biereth

Mika Biereth also became the first player of any age to generate 3.0 xG in a single match this season, no penalties needed. This equals Cole Palmer’s U23 record for Non-Penalty xG + Expected Assisted Goals (3.0). Mohamed Salah is the only other player across all ages to generate 3+ in a single match, doing so against Spurs in Liverpool’s 6-3 win. Don’t worry, there will be more on Mika, later.

🧭 Cristhian Mosquera

Cristhian Mosquera completed 16 Passes into the Final Third in Valencia’s 3-3 draw against Osasuna, the joint-most by an U23 centre-back in a Big Five League game. I thought it was worth a mention as a way to keep up with this ridiculous generation of Spanish centre-backs. Incredibly, at 20 years old, Mosquera is one of the oldest.

📶 Lamine Yamal

Lamine Yamal received 30 Progressive Passes against Real Sociedad, the first U23 player to receive 30+ in a Big Five League game this season and only the third player of any age, joining Álex Grimaldo (35) and Achraf Hakimi (36). In the recent Ethan Nwaneri newsletter, I mentioned Lamine Yamal was the only U17 player on record to receive 30+ Progressive Passes in a Big Five League game. By logging another 30 this weekend, he joins Bukayo Saka as the only other player to receive 30+ Progressive Passes in multiple Big Five League matches before turning 23 years old; Saka is the only U23 player to receive 40+.

🎬 Lamine Yamal

Somehow, Lamine Yamal finished the game against Real Sociedad without scoring a goal or providing assist. In addition to the Progressive Passes Received record above, the 17-year-old (!) equalled the single-game record for Shot-Creating Actions this season. He recorded 13 in this match, equalling the 13 he recorded against Real Vallecano in August. For further context, the only players since 2017/18 to record 13+ SCA in multiple Big Five League matches before turning 23 years old are: Álex Baena, Rayan Cherki, Jamal Musiala, Florian Wirtz and now Lamine Yamal. Only Cherki and Yamal have done it multiple times as teenagers.

5️⃣5️⃣5️⃣ Lamine Yamal (again)

One more Lamine Yamal stat? His 5 Shots, 5 Key Passes and 5 Successful Take-Ons makes him the first player under the age of 23 to record 5+ in each metric in a Big Five League game this season; the first to do so since Jamal Musiala in March 2024. In fact, he is only the third teenager on the Stathead database (since 2017/18) to achieve this feat after Kylian Mbappé in 2017 and Jadon Sancho in 2019; Yamal did so a year younger. Generational.

🚑 Lamine Yamal (last one, I promise)

Sorry, I ended up finding another one. It turns out Yamal also made 9 Carries into the Penalty Area (one off this season’s U23 record) and had 16 Touches in the Attacking Penalty Area (one off this season’s U23 record). Combine this with Shot-Creating Actions and he becomes the second U23 player to record 9+ Carries into the Penalty Area, 9+ Touches in the Attacking Penalty Area and 9+ Shot-Creating Actions in a Big Five European League game this season. Call an ambulance, but not for Lamine.

Only seven different players across all ages have managed this on the Stathead database. The only other player this season is Sávio, who shares holds the U23 records for the metrics Yamal just missed out on, recording 10 CPA, 17 Touches in the Attacking Penalty Area and 10 SCA against Southampton in October. The only other teenager on the Stathead database with this particular Triple is Alejandro Garnacho, doing so against Burnley in April 2024.

⛔️ Jérémy Jacquet

The final stat is not a single game match feat, but something I just had to share. Jérémy Jacquet made his first MNS appearance of the season last month, setting the U23 record for interceptions (8) on his first game back since returning to Rennes on loan. Including that match against Saint-Étienne, the 19-year-old has played 328 Ligue 1 minutes and Rennes are yet to concede a goal with him on the pitch. They have won all three games in which Jacquet has played the full 90 and despite losing 0-2 to Lille, Jacquet was forced off injured in the 58th minute of the match with the scores level. I will repeat what the line from his inaugural MNS mention: this has €30m summer transfer to RB Leipzig written all over it. The only difference is I think the price has already gone up.

Mika Madness

On Friday night, a Mika Biereth hat-trick presented a plethora of rabbit holes to dive into. As I found myself deep inside one, another idea popped into my head. Nothing gets my research gears turning quite like an incredible individual feat and I have attempted to share them all with you in this newsletter.

The first will cover the mind-blowing stats that emerged following his latest hat-trick. The second takes a look at how Biereth scores on the Victor Osimhen Test - this includes an interactive scatter plot for 2024/25. The third introduces an alternative way to evaluate strikers, inspired by a stark contrast between Biereth and his compatriot Rasmus Højlund.

Mika and his mind-blowing milestones

Even before his three goals against Reims, Mika Biereth was already Monaco’s top goalscorer in Ligue 1 this season. Now, after 561 minutes across seven games, he is the only Monaco player to reach double figures. Across the entire division, only five players have scored more goals. In 2025 alone, however, Biereth is joint-top with the on-fire Ousmane Dembélé with 10 goals each.

As alluded to in the SCOUTED Stats section, this was Biereth’s third Ligue 1 hat-trick - he’s completing one every 187 minutes of average in Ligue 1. According to Stats Foot, Biereth is the only player in the past 70 years to complete three hat-tricks within their first seven appearances in the competition. To try to find out just how mad this was, I booted up Stathead.

Biereth is the 49th player on the Stathead database to complete a hat-trick of hat-tricks within a single Big Five European League season - reminder, he joined that list after his first seven games in such a division. In fact, the Dane is just the sixth player to complete a hat-trick of hat-tricks in a single Big Five European League campaign wile under the age of 23. It's quite some list.

It also means that after seven matches, Mika Biereth is one match-ball away from equalling Erling Haaland’s record for most hat-tricks by a player under the age of 23 in a Big Five European League campaign. Based on his output against Reims alone, the signs suggest he is going to do just that. Before we get into the individual stats, I want you to marvel at his shot map from that game.

To confirm: there SEVEN shots in that image - that’s also how many passes he completed. As I highlighted in SCOUTED Stats, these seven shots generated a Non-Penalty Expected Goals total of 3.0. Since the start of the 2017/18 season, only six players have generated 3+ NPxG in a single Big Five League game. The only player to do so at a younger age than Biereth is a 20-year-old Kylian Mbappé at PSG. This is premium Goal-Hanger territory.

The combination of Shot Quanity and Shot Quality is the Holy Grail for the Goal-Hanger Archetype. Each Biereth shot against Reims was worth 0.43 NPxG on average and was taken from an average of 6.1 yards out. Dealing with the NPxG/Shot tally first, this puts Biereth in the top 50 on the Stathead database for highest NPxG/Shot from players to attempt 4+ shots in a Big Five League game. If we move the needle to 5+ shots, he ranks in the top 15, pictured below.

Most NPxG/Shot in a Big Five League game since 2017/18 based on players to attempt 5+ shots | Screenshot via Stathead

As you might have spotted, his Average Shot Distance is the second-closest to goal on that list. If we apply the same 5+ shot threshold, Biereth ranks as the sixth-closest to goal on the Stathead database. In top spot, future Barclaysmen, Burnley-era Chris Wood.

It’s worth pointing out that once again Biereth ranks second behind Youssef En-Nesyri for the alternative metric within this group, in this case NPxG/Shot. The reason it is worth highlighting is because, although this is just one game, these metrics paint the picture of the ultimate poacher, a goal-hanging extraordinaire that accumulates Expected Goals in his sleep.

Let’s put it to the test.

Mika takes the Osimhen Test

👨‍🏫
As Victor Osimhen is not playing in Europe’s Big Five Leagues this season, he would not have appeared in the following database without adding him manually. Because the test is named after him, I calculated his key metrics using FotMob data. The only one we are missing is Average Shot Distance.

For the Victor Osimhen Test 2.0, we are looking at the 207 players that have featured exclusively as forwards with 450+ minutes in Europe’s Big Five Leagues this season. It includes some wide-forwards like Mohamed Salah, but it is the most efficient way to cut out the majority of the noise.

The image gallery below displays the top 20 for: fewest Touches per Shot, highest NPxG per Shot and highest Penalty Box Proximity; Mika Biereth, from his limited sample, ranks in the top 10 for all three metrics.

So, in terms of discovery, he definitely fits the Goal-Hanger Archetype I have tried to build with Victor Osimhen as my muse. Biereth also ranks in the top 20 for Shots per 90 (3.9) and in the top 10 for Average Shot Distance (11 yards) - I repeat: he has the Quantity and the Quality.

In order to evaluate Goal-Hangers, or at least discover some hidden gems, I applied the same logic that SkillCorner use for certain metrics and normalised Non-Penalty Expected Goals per 100 Touches (NPxG/100Tch) - I guess you could call this a form of Possession Adjustment. The result was pretty incredible.

Not only does Biereth rank first, another Sturm Graz alumus in the form of Emmanuel Emegha comes in second. The fact that both rank ahead of Erling Haaland cannot be understated, no matter the size of the sample. You might have also noticed that AS Monaco have two other centre-forwards in this top 20. If Sturm Graz is the ultimate Striker Factory, perhaps AS Monaco is becoming the Finishing School for centre-forwards - I'd to call this phenomenon the 'Falcao Effect', or something.

Plotting NPxG/100Tch alongside Penalty Box Proximity is a quick way to discover and evaluate potential Goal-Hanger Archetypes. To search the interactive chart, make sure to load this up in a browser.

Alongside Osimhen, Emegha and the Monaco trio, you will notice I have auto-highlighted another centre-forward…

Mika and the multi-shot measure

This is perhaps the most ridiculous stat from my Biereth barrage.

🤯
Mika Biereth has completed more league hat-tricks (3 in 7 appearances) than Rasmus Højlund has scored league goals (2 in 22 appearances) in 2024/25.

Biereth and Højlund were born four days apart in February 2003 and have both passed through the Sturm Graz Striker Factory. If anything, Højlund was a better fit for the Athletic Model the Austrian club have mastered. However, in seven Ligue 1 appearances - I keep repeating it because it truly is mad - Biereth has recorded as many 4+ shot games (5) as Højlund has in 121 top-flight league games (5).

This led to a thought: is it better to evaluate strikers based on a Games with X Shots criteria than Shots per 90? By looking at the percentage of matches a player registers your golden number of Shots, you could weed out stat-padders or streaky shooters. It might not be better, but it could be a valuable exercise to undertake as the final part of the recruitment process. To run with this, I pulled the most 4+ Shot Matches in the Stathead database across all ages and then for Under-23 players only. Here are the results.

I then started thinking about Percentage of Matches Scored In as a metric to consider. Not to knock Dimitar Berbatov, he was a sensational footballer beyond the goals he scored, but he won a share of the 2010/11 Premier League Golden Boot despite scoring 25% of his 20 league goals that season in one match against Blackburn - 55% of his tally came in the form of 3+ goal games. Overall, he failed to score in more games (21) than he scored goals (20). This is purely food for thought. As are these tables.

Going back to our of Danish duo, the stark contrast between them is their ability to get shots. If we apply these ‘new’ metrics to each player, these are the results.

Rasmus Højlund has recorded 4+ shots in 5.3% of his 94 top-flight league appearances with at least 30 minutes played; he has failed to attempt a single shot in 27.7% of them.
Mika Biereth has recorded 4+ shots in 17% of his 53 top-flight league appearances with at least 30 minutes played, he has failed to attempt a single shot in 14.8%.

I would like to explore this concept further before deciding whether to add it as a core metric for the Goal-Hanger Archetype. But alas, I have run out of time.

The final thing I will say on the duality of these Danes is that if Chido Obi-Martin builds on his FA Cup cameo and takes Højlund’s starting spot at Manchester United, the latter's place in the national team pecking order could drop further below both Biereth and his teenage teammate ahead of the 2026 World Cup. And I nearly forgot about Conrad Harder.

Looking at this from a positive perspective, the Danish centre-forward succession line looks strong.

Scouting UEFA Competitions

With the Watchlist now part of Tom’s excellent Friday newsletter, The Shortlist, my need to ensure I am providing maximum value comes in the form of providing a list of 2001+ players for the remaining 48 clubs in UEFA competition this season.

If that is of interest, you will find collapsable tab for every Round of 16 knockout tie across the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League and UEFA Conference League which includes a list of players born in 2001 or later that have played at least one game for each team in UEFA competition this season.

⚠️
I have tried to remove any players that have made a move in January - Jhon Durán, for example - but I may have missed some. Let me know if you spot any.

Within each list, I have put one player from each team in bold to highlight names that you might want to keep an eye on in particular. Use toggles to plan your schedule for this week’s games or add a few names to your shortlists.
